Review:
Susan acid make the kind of music you would hear on a car stereo, gaffer tape around your mouth, in the boot of a car, being taken to your death by a deranged serial killer.
This is dark and heavy music. Susan acid wears their influences like a bruises-Nine inch nails being an obvious reference point, but there are other sounds below the black surface.
‘Humbledrome’ shows Susan Acid at their best; this should have opened the album as it’s easily their best song. With qualities similar to Filters ‘Hey man, nice shot’-this would make a great single. It also works as an introduction to Susan acids sound.
The opener track ‘The pincushion queen’ loses some of its Manson/Tool venom, had it been placed after ‘Humbledrome’ it would have provided relief and balance to the album. The three song suite ‘The ungod trilogy’ is an ambitious attempt, with its aim achieved slightly, but let down with some slight meandering. The use of effects both vocal and electronic really push the industrial aspect of Susan acids sound out-this could have worked very well as a single song, but unfortunately has only several standout points-‘The toy of god’ riff being one, Matteo Sei’s vocal work being another.
One of the elements that hamper this album is the mix, mainly in the guitar sound, it is good, but with some adjustments could have been very special indeed-‘Humbledrome’ being the most obvious example.
Trent Reznor vocals abound with another standout track ‘Erika & Omar’ with Tool again, showing a mix many people will be attracted to, that discordant, experimental sound bordering on falling apart. The quieter guitar parts work very well, before the guitar gets layered and muted into a riff beating you about the senses.
One of the things that unravels as you listen to the album, by design or otherwise is it’s similar stance to Alice in chains’ ‘Dirt’ that hopelessness and happiness in it.
‘Miss Anthropy’ may have worked better as an EP,which is often a criticism for lack of ideas-in this case it’s the opposite, the music hear is good and Susan Acid have interesting ideas, some of which needed further exploration, as opposed to the thirty minutes here.
